The NFA 9' has nearly as much volume as your HN, but since it is spread on more length, its rails will be much thinner, and you will be surprised that the NFA will offer you a more sensitive and nimble feel on the wave, a real "surfing" feel rather than big volume rails that need to be forced into the water in turns.

Also, if you put a small central fin in the NFA (like https://gongsupshop.com/epages/box1707. ... FLBGCENTER ) you will be surprized by how the NFA can turn. Modern Longboard shapes (also called "performance") have nothing in common with the old retro shapes that are meant to go straight while the rider walks on them.

The NFA 8' will not have more glide than your HN 8', or any other 8' board.

OK, I'm warming to the longboard idea and keeping my HN. There is a Pro NFA on sale as the weight is +20%. This is slightly narrower with 115L instead of 120L. Thinking this could be slightly quicker than the Nsp construction?

One last question is the 9' NFA alot quicker than the 8'4 Karmen both paddling and getting into the wave?

Thanks

The "Pro NFA" (Actually The Freak, which is close to the NFA but a bit more high performance: thinner rails, etc...) is a good choice. It will be a little bit faster because it is less wide, yes.

Note that the Pro construction is more dynamic on the water, but is less resistant to hard impacts: for instance a gust of wind made my Pro Karmen roll on the road two days ago, and it got a small puncture because the bottom (which has no PVC sandwich) landed on a small pointy rock. The FSP would have had nothing. The Pro is very tough on the water, but more care must be taken on land.

The NFA 9' will be faster than the Karmen 8'4" because of the addition of many factors:
- the length. The paddling speed limit is proportional to the length: so 10% faster for the length alone between the Freak 9'2" and Karmen 8'4"
- the rocker: the NFA has a flatter rocker, so it is faster
- the outline: the NFA outline is less curved, water is less disturbed
- the row effect: since it is longer, you can apply more power to your paddle instantly without fearing the row effect (yaw), so you can accelerate quickly to get out of the impact zone. It may be the mnost important factor, especially if you do not have a perfect paddling technique yet. And with a (optional) screwless fin in the US box rail, you can adjust the fin on the water for your personal compromise: to the rear = less row effect, to the front = easier turns.

So, it will not paddle twice as fast, there is no miracle. I'd say 20% faster. But it makes a real difference when you must get out fast, and take waves.

OK, lastly do you think the 115L for the NFA 9' Pro will be OK for stability? Is it much different to the NFA as in the details the NFA says intermemdiate/expert and the pro says expert..

Hello,

for your weight and program 115lt are more than enough to be stable in all conditions. Especially it is very functional in the NFA the way the volume is divided in the shape of the board. A beginner it will find comfort, an intermediate will make the best out of it.

As Luca said. On stability, the page says "Less than 75 kg : easy."

The stated required level is not entierely relevant here, as you will have extra volume for your weight to provide stability and glide. But with a shape narrow enough to be very lively on the wave.

And a last advice: watch this video before each session to pump you up :-)

phpBB [video]

It shows how a performance longboard shape with thin rails and a small central fin can be very nimble, especially when you put your back foot on the tail...
