Un autre retour:
Hilly a écrit : oK we have all seen JB froth man reviewing wings. Typical of those with a vested interest they find these are the best things since sliced bread. Looks gay as feck to me.
Soooo, I got a 2 hours session on the 4m Duotone today. With a 6 10 Fanatic Air and Axis 920. I can sup foil, kite foil and used to windsurf.
Found it super easy to putt around in light wind, not foiling , just like a windsurfer in light wind and stay upwind. Could light wind gybe ok straight off. These are easy to use. Couple of tricks for new players - do not let the trailing edge dig in and do not lean back like a kite or windsurfer.
With a few gusts I got up like the vid below I took of Jas from WAsurf/westOz.
+
super easy to use, simple setup,
not as hard on the body as I thought it would be, enjoyable
-
downwind hard, needs more wind than expected, blocks your view like a windsurfer, flaps around heaps when on leash
!
Boom is the way to go I think, super controllable
Can see noobs liking it on a sup then progressing to foil.
Bottom line - Even though I thought I would hate it I have ordered one. Agree with Naish that a 4 is all you need and I am 105kg (disclaimer- as long as you have wind over 12 knots). When would I use it? Light to medium wind small swell. Straight after work when I cannot be bothered to set up the kite.
I think 4 m2 is good with wind above 10 knots. I would not bother under 10 knots just paddle. I worry the bigger 5 will dig into the water and be more of an issue starting. 4 had heaps of power for me at 105kg.
Boom is awesome and you can tune the wing with outhaul. Never used a handle one but I think it would be less reactive to your input. Boom can bang into your board which may be a negative.
Window is too small and in the wrong place. Hard to see through like any windsurfer sail. Should be right next too leading edge. If you want to see get a kite.

Re: Wingfoil
Julie Scheyer a écrit :I will add my input on the “adding a paddle in case”.
First, the slingshot wing is 2lbs heavier(1kilo) than the 4m duotone. So now, you want to add the weight of a paddle, for “just in case”. Also think about the paddle blade wind drag and how it handles gusts as you are riding.
I have no problem prone paddling out of Maliko from the boat ramp, on a 68L board to the wind line, that barely floats me, and I am a middle aged woman with no weight training. The wing sits on your back.
Also, if the wind dies, it’s really easy to sit or kneel on your board, and hold the wing (like a spinnaker) and steer in. I have done that into the harbor in fact when the wind lows dropped but I decided to go to my car anyways. Unlike having to self rescue kite boarding. Maybe Kiters and windsurfer need a paddle. Hehe
I tried the Naish with a paddle attached, and it has lateral movement if you sheet in, and especially pumping, and then it also has feedback delay because of the webbing stretch. Very inefficient!
Especially a place like the gorge does not need a safety paddle. Hitch hike. Even a channel crossing doesn’t because you have a rescue boat. Honestly it would be impossible to not sense the wind is dropping on a Maliko run or most places and to head toward shore, and hitch hike.
Nowadays I'm also riding boards so small that I would not be able to use a paddle if I had one. I can't even kneel on some boards and paddle them. If the wind drops, I'm pretty good at flying long enough to get to shore. If the wind goes dead without warning, I'm pretty much in the same fix as any windsurfer or kiter who's also out there.
I would worry about the leashes breaking! Need double leashes more than a paddle.

Re: All about wings

Julie Scheyer a écrit :Why don’t you want to foil? If you can do all the other things, you can definitely foil. The foiling is the fun! I wasn’t able to use a paddle, because it’s too physically hard and injures me. The wing is just there to let me fly on the foil.
I would rather kite or windsurf, or mtn bike than slog around with a wing and a SUP board. Maybe it’s a good way to learn how to use the wing, but definitely not my idea of fun.
Alan uses the daggerboard in order to help his students stay upwind. I think you need the daggerboard or hydrofoil to stay upwind.
Wings have been around for years, and are only now fun because of the hydrofoil. Ken Winner had been downwind foil paddling with Mark Rhapahost and Alan Cadiz and injured his shoulder paddling. He wanted to keep going with them, and made some wings for himself. He spent at least a year getting them designed to give him the power he needed(to be faster than his paddling buddies the wings started floppy and with handles, and quickly made booms. Alan made some metal front ends, then they wanted windows to avoid turtles and friends, then tighter leach tension, then battens. He said it’s been at least 30 prototypes. All because he wanted to hydrofoil downwind without paddle injuries. ]

Re: All about wings
Borrowing the 4 or 5 meter SPG doesn't really work for me. Not only does it feel radically different from the Duotone, it's also a bit heavier, which means unless it's flying briskly it's tough on my shoulders

Re: All about wings
Piros a écrit :As JB mentioned above winter in Aus is really sh!t wind for wind sports , it's gutsy , shifty and drops a lot. Just makes it hard to learn. You really do need a consistent solid 15 Knots to learn , more is better . Plus use a slightly larger board . Just getting to your feet and getting going is the hardest part. Trying to learn in less wind is just so taxing on you , you'll want burn the wing in just 30 mins. Holding it up and keeping the bottom tip out of the water without a decent breeze is hell. If you don't you run over it and it goes under your board , incredibly frustrating. 4m less a problem but Guy was the only one who could get up on the 4m we all needed the 5m.
But once the wind is up and you build up speed it comes up pretty easy , yes a more skilled rider with a bit of windsurfing back ground will thump & pump it up in less breeze but that takes time for a newbie. As far as tacking up wind and coming home straight Downwind, yeah good luck with that , yes totally possible but again another higher skill set.
I've only had a couple of cracks at it over a couple of days , it is fun but taxing to learn . Start in a river or lake and try and get wind against tide and do it with a few mates you burn up the energy pretty fast and need to recharge. The smaller 4m is easier to manage but much harder to start in the lighter breeze compared to the 5m . It's harder than it looks but you do pick it up pretty fast and again my best advice wait for a solid 15knot breeze to learn.

Hello,
Merci.

Re: All about wings
