Mob overweigh ;(

Message par giacomo » ven. févr. 12, 2021 10:27 pm

Hi all,
I just received all happy my new MOB 7'2 FSP2X and.............................. it weight 7kg naked.........................
if I had known I would have taken the 2Taste that weight 7,3kilo, but in the end I had decided for the classic Mob because of the declared weight at 6kg .......... result: 1 kg more, same of the 2taste. unbelievable.
My Karmen 7'8 fsp2x weight less (6,5kg), my old NFA7 xtr weight less too. My Freak 9'2 weight 7,5kg, and this 7!!?????
Is that normal as I was told?? I don't think.
honestly I'm pretty disappointed this time....

As I have bought more than 50 boards, I can offer not a solution, but share some of my experience:
- boards weights vary, that's life. A board listed at 6.0kg may be 5.7 to 6.3kg. And it varies with time, the factories often make boards lighter as they gain experience
- boards weights are stated without the pad. For a 6kg boards, you have about 400g pad (I read about 900g / m2). So your board could be 6.1 to 6.7
- an heavier board is more resistant to paddle hits. I have to put rail savers on my lighter ones, but no need on the heavier ones.
- some weight may not be a problem depending on the board use, it will help handling in chop for instance.
- if you intend to use the board in small waves, as I guess is the case with a Mob 7'2", and the weight is critical, you may well inquire of the actual weights beforehand to know the current range of weights produced by the factory.
- if you find a board too heavy for your use, just resell it locally and negociate - privately - a rebate on the replacement. Even without a rebate, it will still end up much cheaper than other brands. It did it sometimes, for my Ones and Fatals (three Fatal 7'3"s recently)
- if weight is critical for you, why not buy a Pro construction, which is designed for this?
- "if I had known I would have taken the 2Taste that weight 7,3kilo"... no, it is stated for 7.3kg, which means that it could weight 8.1kg with pad.

I know how it can be disappointing to have reality not meeting our hopes, it happened to me, but it is a subjective feeling that is often exagerated and can be put in perspective... and is most of the time not really noticeable on the water.

How I can resell a new board without lose a lot of money?
And yes I get the mob also for vertical.... And for long walk in the beach to reach the spot, I need a light board. Also for this reason I bought the mob...
No, this time I am disappointed...

You will lose money on resale, but my point is that this loss of resale value is a real, measurable, thing that you can both use as a base for negotiations, and to get some perspective compared to other brands. It is not all or nothing, your board does not lose ALL its value.

I too often see people - me included - distressed by a small problem and calling the manufacturer support without having done this exercise to think about what was important for them, and how much they evaluate the damage, and think about solutions rather than just airing grievances. For instance, If weight is so important for you, why not get a "Pro"?.

I bought three Fatal 7'3" to get my current ultra light one (With Humberto happy to buy one :-) ). But in total, it cost me still much less than trying to buy a light board from another brand. I know that with the shipping fees to Italy it will not be the same for you, but you should try to put things in perspective. I may buy a Zero 9' next, but for it a bit extra weight wont be a problem, as I will welcome the extra impact resistance and handling in chop.

Again, I do not want to sound patronizing. I went through the same emotions as you (I got a Cloud/Fract 8'1" at 10kg once), I just want to share my experience.
