Best board for choppy water and small/medium wave

Message par molla » lun. mai 06, 2019 3:12 pm

Hi, which board (not bigger than 9) do you suggest for choppy water and medium/small wave?

I'm 1,80 cm x 80/90kg (Intermediate level)

Hello,

if you like noseriding, NFA is really nice, 9'.

If you don't care about noserides: Mob is your best choice for this program. Easy, fast on the wave, compact 8) 8) 8)

Thanks,

I see in your signature that you already have a Mob.

What do you want that the Mob doesn't provide you? As Ours said, the Mob is the best board for these conditions... you should be more specific.

For instance, if chop is a problem because you lack lateral stability while paddling, you will want a wider board. But if the issue is bouncing on the wave face with the chop while surfing the wave, you will want the opposite: a narrow board...

Hi, Thanks to all for the reply.

I have a mob pro 7.6 125 lt first serie and a moblog sp 119 lt but when is choppy I choose always my old starboard hero 9x33x149lt because I find the mob 7.6 too difficult in extreand the moblog is more easy but is too extreme cause the nose finish a lot of time under water.

One of my friend have bought a cloud 9,1 140lt last year and I hace tried. Was funny and easy also with choppy and windy..

I have see the new mobs.. now they have minus liters than mine version.. seems that the FSP type 8,3 140lt could be ok for me.

I have see also NFA 9 120lt

I want to sell my starboard and buy a easy board to take more wave than I can without stress.

I have see also the karmen SP 8,9 140lt.. I think that could be an options...

I'm undecided...

OK, then forget the Mob, it is apparently too short for you for your current level.
And the low rocker of advanced longboard SUPs like the Moblog is hard to handle for you. (NFAs have more rocker)

The Karmen 8'9" would then be your best option: It is a modern version of the cloud (faster, smoother). As easy as the Cloud, but with higher performance.

Hi, I am 85kg 1m83 53yr old and learning to surf whenever possible (I live in Mediterranean SE Spain) I have a Cloud 9'10 and I manage to catch hip/shoulder level waves mostly frontside. I would like to have a board that would be more manoeuvrable yet easy on typical soft Mediterranean conditions yet capable in ocasional bigger waves (in the rare Cadiz or Portugal trip). Would a Mob FSP 8'3-8'6 be a good choice for me? I obviously need to keep practicing and learning with the Cloud but already thinking of the next step.

Hi leobob,

If you do not have a previous surfing experience, I would advise to keep some length, otherwise your wave count will suffer a lot. A shorter board is slower to paddle, so it is worth it only if you have both the paddle technique to accelerate hard while controling the row effect, and well placed relative to the wave.

At your level I would advise the NFA 9': it has enough length to catch waves easily, enough nose width to be stable, and a relatively narrow and thin tail to turn easily without having to move your back foot around a lot.

After some progress, the Mob 8'3" would be fine. The 8'6" will be big for your size, stable but to turn it sharply you would have to move your rear foot on the kicktail, which is technical.

Is there a big difference between karmen 8.9 and karmen 8.4?

As you say "I want to [...] buy a easy board to take more wave than I can without stress.", I am afraid that the 8'4" (at your current level and in chop) will not be worth the extra stress.

Reducing board size is only worth it on waves powerful enough, otherwise you do not gain anything but trouble.

One more question, are the Zero or the Freak in a similar size (9-9'2) and volume (125-130) valid alternatives for my skill level?

The Freak, yes, it is a similar shape to the NFA, but tweaked for higher performance while a bit less stable (less width, thinner rails).
It is lighter but less impact resistant, it will ding more easily on hard surfaces (street, rocks, other boards)

The zero is geared for higher speeds, it is not worth it at your level.

For this it is best to mail the team ([email protected]). They may miss some forum posts, especially when busy like in this period.
