Hello,

Merci.

Re: How to : Nose ride : l'importance de la symétrie

Message par Ours » jeu. août 14, 2014 7:43 pm

Hello,

Bear: This is a brilliant post, both philosophical and practical, with insights of use far beyond the world of surfing. I can only read it in the Google translation, which is lumpy and bumpy at best, but I get the main points like I get a poem, and it's terrific stuff. Thanks!

bear: no questions at the moment, just wanted to thank you for your posts. very helpful to my everlasting goal of one day being able to noseride. i have a medical condition that messes with my balance and makes the walk up difficult but that hasn't stopped me from trying ... (if you read english, here's a story about my journey, and the help that wingnut gave me: http://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-ad ... eling.html ).

also, i've spent a good many hours studying the last two posts on this page: http://alohaki.jugem.jp/?month=201401. some interesting stuff.

and then i always come back here, to see if you've said anything new.

thanks again, and keep up the great work.

Hello,

This story is well written and impressive.

Many thanks to share.

Again, if you have any question, we are here.

About your goal, I just want to give my point of view as a shaper. Those who make real noseriders know that there is two kinds of noseriders.
The originals work with displacement. The new work with planning.

Now we know how to make noseriders that surf "alone".
For example a modern noserider needs an accurate drive, a dominante driver.
At the opposite, some boards are automatic. There shape put them automatically on the right line and maintain the right speed to maximize the noseride. They need a passive driver. This is the Never Stick or IT boards on my lines.

These boards do the job. Your job is to understand the wave to give some inputs: take off, bottom, walking. Just 3 little inputs then the board follow its line an works. I do these boards for surfers who wants to focus their mind on the wave analysis at 90%.
Modern boards can do ten times, twenty times more tricks, going faster, anything... But you mind is 50/50 between board driving and wave analysis.

In your case, you can help your surf with the boards that do the job for your body. I think that you will live your dream easier with a board that asks you more thinking than acting.
Those boards can be surfed with something like no move. And they are the best board style for noserides on slow waves.

The help of the paddle is fantastic for you. All you can't do with you feet can be done with the paddle.

Anyway, just to share.

Thanks,

hello!

ah yes, i would love the automatic nature of the never stick, but ... there aren't any in the U.S. and, besides, I need much more width (32") and volume than the current version has. oh well ...

but that brings me to this: " All you can't do with you feet can be done with the paddle." What a terrific and hopeful thought, and i'm wondering if you can expand on it and tell me more about what you mean.

i have seen a video of gwen cristien where he uses the paddle to kind of pull himself forward on the board while he is walking. is that what you mean? could you offer other examples and say how else i might use the paddle to make up for my feet?

thank you so much. i'm feeling a little more optimistic about getting to the nose after reading your post.

Re: How to : Nose ride

Hello,

I am sure that you can find a local shaper to make a Never Stick. This shape is all about the how much the board flys on the nose and suck on the tail.
A Never Stick is a board that goes faster when you walk to the nose, like many non planning boards. But the specialty is that the tail holds the board on the right wave timing to maximize the noseride ability.
The rocker is increasing on the third back part, it creates a depressure when you noseride that sticks the back of the board on the wave and retain its speed.
The deck has a depressure on the same third part to increase the top rocker on the back third. When the water goes on it, it works like spoiler on a car, increasing the pressure on the back wheels.
Those specs work like this : when the wave is slow, the board is slow, when the waves speed increase, the board speed increase BUT the tail wants to stay always at the right spot on the wave to maximize noserides. Difficult to explain but you got the meaning.

On a regular modern board, you have to retain the board on the right spot. Stall, being late, hands on the lip, everything comes from your work.
On a Never Stick, the board does it naturally.

Anyway, the paddle must be considered as a third foot in SUPing. Because it not only helps your paddling, it makes your balance 10 times more efficient.
You can put some weight on the paddle and increase the vertical angle of your body to increase your turn ability.

But in the noseride subject, you can really increase your balance and replace foot work by paddle work.
The basis of this is to have a board with a powerful nose lift effect. Not a kind of touchy noserider, nor a too much rocker board. To feel what try to explain, you need a extra powerful nose.
When you have a board that flys really well on the nose, you can do the accurate job with the paddle.

First, cruise on the wave hips high just in the middle of your board. Place the paddle like the blade surfs the back face of the wave, just behind the lip. Ok, you feel it?
Then, put more weight on the blade by pushing a little more on your internal shoulder (the one on the wave side). You can see your board going up on the face and its speed decreasing.
Then release the pressure on the blade: your speed increase and you line is going down.
It acts like catching the wave face with your hand during tuberiding.

When you have this, find a knee high wave, a long one, starts early, put the board on the trim line as you can, using the blade as a pivot, and walk to the nose without thinking.
The only thing you can think are:
- walking ON the board ;-)
- manage your balance and line with the paddle.

I am 100% sure that you can do it.

Let me know your questions.

Thanks.

hello hello --

sure, i would love to get a shaper in the U.S. to make me a Never Stick. Would you perhaps be able and/or willing to sell me cad drawings and specs for one? If so, let's discuss my special needs. If not, I understand, no worries.

meanwhile, here i am on a typical wave, getting toward the nose but never to it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KWCsxRV5q0 . could you offer some advice as to what the flaws are and what i need to work on?

from what i can tell i am riding too low on the wave, in the bottom half instead of in the top 1/3. thinking about what you said about using the paddle, i could have put the blade on the back of the wave and leaned on the paddle a little, to pull my board up the wave into the top 1/3. do i have that right?

also: i'm riding tooooo far out onto the shoulder. again, leaning on the paddle could have slowed me down and pulled me back toward the curl. right?

have any further ideas and thoughts, based on what you see?

thanks again. like i said, you have been giving me hope!

Hello,

I can't send the CAD. It is the fruit of my 25 years of experience

This video is perfect. You make one huge mistake:
you don't trust on it !!!

From the second 6 of this movie, you can be noseriding hang ten with a SUP. 10000% sure.
Your take off is perfect.
Your bottom turn is perfect and in the nice timing.
You can walk 1 second earlier but you don't do it because you are not confident.

How to be more confident?

1/ trust on you, on the board and on the wave. Everything is perfect on this video. So just do it.

2/ use the paddle properly:
- keep an angle of 90° between the board axis and the paddle shaft. On the video your paddle blade his behind you. It must be at your front foot during the walking.
- apply the same pressure on the paddle with your 2 hands. Don't put all the weight on the inside hand.
- put your shoulders a little bit forward. It increase the pressure on your toes and maximize your balance.
- use the blade like another surfboard. It is another surfboard where you put your third foot.

The distance between a perfect hang five all along this wave and this video is only in your mind. But, it is the problem of 99% of the guys who want to noseride

Someone said: just do it. So

It is that easy. I don't see any more mistake in your video. And because I am a shaper, I have to say that your board is not a real noserider. But it is not a big deal.

Enjoy,
GONG owner and shaper

great suggestions and inspiration. wow. a few things:

1/ when you say 90-degrees, do you mean like in the picture i've attached?

2/ and are his shoulders in about the right position?

3/ if the paddle is 90 degrees to the board, does that mean that the shoulders are pretty much square to the front of the board?

btw / the other picture below is of the board i am riding. no, it's not a noserider ... it's a pig  !

Hello,

the attitude of the guy on the photo you posted is absolutely perfect for a safe hang five. He is on the mode 100% control.
Perfect.

Just his line is a little too high on the face. His speed will decrease and his board will fall with the lip if he doesn't go down now about 1/3 of the face. But for sure he knows it. But for you, just imagine the same attitude 1/3 down, just below the middle of the face.

About his shoulders, they are perfect. You just manage the angle of the paddle with your arms.

One very important thing:
If you want to be better at noserides, you must train out of the water.
If you are the luckiest guy in the world with a perfect glassy 3 feet in front of your house every day, ok, you can avoid the land training. If not, go for this.
Find a wood log, put it on the grass, cut it at the length of your board, and walk on it with your paddle.
Repeat the cross steps job 1 million times.
Make the distance, the length of each step absolutely automatic.
If you do this, you save years of fails.

About your board, it looks good. Can i see the rocker?

Thanks,
