Quiver 2017 for 63kg experienced super

Message par MagW » ven. nov. 04, 2016 7:39 pm

Time has come to plan for the 2017 quiver, consisting of 3 - 4 wave boards.

I have sold quite a few boards so the existing boards are:
10' IT XTR (26 3/8" = 67cm wide volume : 105 lit). For small-medium days less windy.
9' NFA slim (27,5" = 70cm wide volume: 100 lit). For small-big days windy days.
7'6 Final (29'1" = 74cm wide volume 105 lit). For small -medium days with less chop/less wind.

I will keep the IT10' for sure, it is too good!

I am looking for a "Tomo-style" board, the Mob or One. And maybe a Curve/Fatal board. And maybe switch my NFA9'.
I have lots of wind (10-40kts) and slow wind waves (0,5-3m) so I need some width but also low volume so I don't stand above the surface too much like on a floating cork or log. Absolutely not more than 100 liters.

Obvious choices are Mob7'2 SP, One 6'6 SP or 6'8 SP or the 7'8 Cloud (new shape 2017 or?)

Another nice looking board is 2017 Fatal 7'1 SP or a new Curve (new shape 2017 or?).

The Zero 100 SP is 68cm wide and looks really nice.

Any thoughts or advice?
/Magnus

Interesting...

I would rule out the Fatal, its narrow tail and rocker won't be of use in slow waves.

I would add a One SP for fun in small waves.

I would replace the Final by a Curve: same kind of board, but more stable and a smoother (carving) ride, but a bit slower.

This would give: IT + 9' NFA Slim + One SP + Curve

A Mob would be interesting for a 3-boards quiver: IT + 9' NFA Slim + Mob SP
But for 4 boards, I think the duo One + Curve covers a wider range of feelings and condition

Thx Colas,
I haven't read anything about new Curve shapes 2017, have you?? If the nose gets wider, like the Fatal, I think it would be nice.

The One SP 6'8 x 72, 98 has too much volume on to small size, it gets to floaty I believe for me. The 6'6 90 is more suited for me, or? But then the width of One 6'6 76 cm is slower and push more water when paddling. The Mob 7'2 SP 71cm and 95 lit is the "perfect" compromise...or is it not as good as One in smaller waves??

On the curve 2017 evolutions, I don't know. But I do not think the curve needs a wide nose: the curves are quite stable now (much, much stabler than a XTR final), and I find that their sleek nose give them a superb paddling speed to enter the wave and ignore chop, it slices through it like a hot knife in butter, but the nose is wide enough to not dig a side rail. I had fun with it in windy conditions ( http://www.gongsup.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 826#p91826 ) where a wider nose would have plowed.
Wide nose are superb on late take offs, where you take off with no initial speed. Curves are killer weapons for taking off with some paddling speed.

On the short SUP, I think there is a compromise to find:
- Shorter (One) is harder for the take off: it means that the board is easily stopped dead by a chop, and that you can easily be put off-balance by a chop, shifting the weight too much backwards or forwards, ruining the delicate timing needed to take off on shortSUPs
- Longer (Mob) will ease the takeoff, but the board will be a tad less nimble to turn on very small waves. Also the One 2016 have huge (thick) rear rails that help a lot pushing on the tail on take off and turns in very weak waves. The Mob have more "normal" rails, but that can handle a lot more size.

The One width makes it slower while paddling, but actually faster when planing on the wave. I stumbled across the very interesting articles on board design by Rusty Preisendorfer recently who explains why: http://www.surfline.com/blogs/talking-d ... s-a_40518/

By thinking more about it, I guess the Mob could be the better choice: more all-around, you just grad it and know that it will be fun whatever the conditions. The One will be a more specialized tool, where you will need to read more the wave/chop and "work" the board to use it...

An interesting article indeed! An other articles on the same site by the same guy. Thx!

My Final is a proto so it has a wider nose, I think very similar to a 7'6 Curve actually. But it has 5 liters to much volume for me. And a little flat (and wide) nose rocker maybe.

The wise choice is probably to start with the Mob and the think about the next "step". The One, would probably also work fine, it is just the timing and constantly moving peaks we have to deal with that worry me. There are very few point breaks around here unfortunately. So we are constantly changing position depending on the actual wave.

First change for 2017 will be a Mob 7'2 Pro SP 95!
