GONG Cloud pro XTR 8'1 or 7'8
GONG Cloud pro XTR 8'1 or 7'8
Salut,
I'm looking actually for my next SUP. I have a Age of 34y and weigh about 61 Kg. I have a good Fitness level and paddlesurf 1-3 times a week. Actually I use my Incredible ten Bamby as go to board for paddle surfing. It is a really Magic board with a lot of Performance especially when the wave get a bit bigger and more powerfull. I surf in more or less "chaotic" North sea conditions with waves between 0,5 and 2,5m and periods of 5 to 10s.
Actually I'm looking for a Board to complement the quiver for "short" board SUP. After some chat with Magnus and Coolas I wasnt sure if I should take a NFA 8 pro XTR or Cloud 8'1 pro XTR. After reading a lot I also thought about NFA 7 pro XTR (for a new big challenge) but I think it would be difficult to get out in messy conditions. So I thought about another compromise the Cloud 7'8 pro XTR..
I'm a little afraid of the volume of 100l but I think I could handle this.
What would you suggest?
Thanks for your Posts
Sascha

Hi Sascha,
first of all, congratulations for the use of the IT in big conditions. I have it but I always use just in small wave, for other conditions I use Faking or Curve (big).
With regard to your question both the boards (cloud 7'8 or 8'1) will be ok for you. Maybe, for my personal opinion, I suggest you the cloud 7'8, just for your weight of 61kg.
Also the NFA 8 is a super board but if you are looking for something more "shortboard" so NFA is not your case.

Re: GONG Cloud pro XTR 8'1 or 7'8
Volume is helping when we begin to have a stable platform. But if you look at it, stable means that the board sits firmly in the water and obeys more the water movement (that is: none, when we begin on the flat) than the mistakes of our body.
But when the water moves with heavy chop, it means the board will obey more the water than you and will trhrow you around more. Too high volumes for your weight may become hell in heavy chop.

Thanks.
It's only 10 liters difference so it won't be that dramatic. But I thought about the same thing coolas mentioned. The lower volume would maybe have some advantages in the chop. The 7'8 is 2cm narrower what I like the most.
Will it work in smaller waves too (Knee to waist high)
Thanks
Sascha

Re: GONG Cloud pro XTR 8'1 or 7'8
Yes, the cloud is magic on weak waves: its built-in speeds compensates for slow waves and chop. A curve would need more work to compensate on weak wave sections.
The NFA 8' will have a smoother acceleration, the Clouds will be more energetic. But they are not worlds apart.
On the volume, I was just saying that more volume does not always means more stable.
And you are right: going straight to a 7 ' will be a big challenge in chop: learning to tame a 7' board is much easier in glassy small waves.

Re: GONG Cloud pro XTR 8'1 or 7'8
Thx for your advices.
You both mentioned the NFA 8 XTR again. Long time I was sure that this will be my next board. Its smooth outline, thruster Setup, shortboardish length with the possibility for noses - an egg-laying, milk-bearing woolly sow.
Now its in my mind again - sh**
I read so much about the clouds, everybody seems to be very happy with it and for northsea conditions it seems to be the right programm.

Re: GONG Cloud pro XTR 8'1 or 7'8
Will there be a huge difference in paddling speed (8'1 vs. 7'8)?
Thx.

Re: GONG Cloud pro XTR 8'1 or 7'8
Not a lot. The 7'8" being a bit narrower, it will help its speed.
There would have been a big difference if you were heavy enough to have the 7'8" tail fully submerged while paddling, while not for the 8'1". But not for your 61kg.

Re: GONG Cloud pro XTR 8'1 or 7'8
The Cloud 8'1 is quite stable for my63. When you train more on the narrow IT the balance gets better and better. So you can handle the 74cm 7'8 better with your improved ability.
For small waves the 8'1 can be better than the 7'8 but for medium waves the 7'8 is for sure better for your light weight. It´f you want some margin for chop and wind the 8'1 can help, but i am sure you will be happy with either of them.
If you have IT + 8-9' SUP you should take the 7'8, I think.

Re: GONG Cloud pro XTR 8'1 or 7'8
Thx for your comments,
@Magnus: the Cloud 7'8 should be my 8-9 Board
for very small or bigger clean conditions or when I just want a longboard feeling I will use my IT (actually I use it in every kind of conditions even in chaotic headhigh surf, I love it. Only thing is same as you mentioned in your IT PU post, when you wanna turn quickly in the choppy its a bit tricky)
I Need the new Board for everything else: more aggressive style, shorter board... as a kind of counterpoint (longboard vs. minimal/fun-/shortboard/perf). I'm not afraid that I cant manage the Cloud 7'8 in balance issues. I'm afraid of my wave Count or that i have more Problems to handle the board instead of having fun riding waves.
thx

Re: GONG Cloud pro XTR 8'1 or 7'8
Your waves are a little bit faster than mine. I think you should get the 7'8, perfect for 0,5-2,5 m as you menthioned. The acceleration is great!
