All foils : understand wings : flat or curved

Hello,

Kiters are familiar with their Foils (most of them anyway;)), but for new Foilers in Surf and SUP I want to expound on some important elements.

About the Flat, the Concave and the Dihedral angles of the wings :

We hear many things about this subject, especially about how curved wings turn better. It is true in part. But does a surfboard with concave turn better than a board that is V’d? You can see that isolating an element is very reductive.
If we isolate this criteria only, we could say that a curved wing doesn’t turn better than a a flat one, in any case not only on this minor parameter in the face of others.

On the other hand the curvature allows you to come out of the water the latest when you’re flying at the Foils pinacle. It will hold off the the disengagement through ventilation. But as you’re about to pull the points out of the water, on a curved wing you will have the experience the movement and traction of and towards the water which can be hindering and undesired.
Henceforth a late disengagement but harder regain.

A flat wing is more straight forward, faster, has more lift and is more powerful because all forces contribute to the lift without ever opposing it.
