Gong Faking Bamby delamintation under the feets
Hi,
I’m on vacation in the north of Spain and experiences some problems with my Gong Faking 6’11 Bamby.
The deck have become wobbly under the feets. I think it have been decompressed earlier, but it now seems that it have been delaminated. I have made a small movie that shows the problem:
https://youtu.be/hitylIrXYo8
Could i continue using it or will it crack and water come in? How could it be repaired?
Luckily i brought two boards, but i really enjoy the Faking so i want it on the water as fast as possible.
Thanks,
Knut

Hi, it may not be delamination, it looks too flexible for that.
It suspect it is only the pad that have unglued in some places. What you see is then just a bubble of air under the padThis can happen easily when hot (under the sun, in a closed car, ...)
Just cut a small opening in the pad (1cm) with a knife to see if you can burst the bubble. If it is only the pad, open more and just re-glue it by using a MS Polymer glue (UHU Max Repair, Pattex 100%, SADER Mega Strong, ... ) or polyurthane (Gorilla glue, Sika). These are glues that stay flexible, harden with water, and do not damage the board.
If not, it is delaminated and should be repaired. How depends on the size of the damage.

Re: Gong Faking Bamby delamintation under the feets
I was hoping for the pad aswell, but when i loosened the pad it turns out it’s the deck itself.
It’s a quite large area on both sides of the handle where i have my feet when paddling. Can every surfshop repair shop handle this or is it a complicated repair?
Thanks,
Knut

Re: Gong Faking Bamby delamintation under the feets
Ah, the danger there is that the handle is a fixed point while the skin is moving around it, so cracks will most probably appear on the edges of the handle. When these cracks appear, the blank will absorb liters of water that will be quite hard to remove.
First thing is to check for these cracks: cut the pad around the handle so that you can see 1 to 2 cm around the paddle edge, fill the handle up to the pad with soapy water, so that the handle edges are under water (see first pic of http://www.gongsup.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 921#p74921 ), and let the board 2 mn in the sun. If there are bubbles, there are cracks, and there is water in the board.
If there is water, open as soon as you can and let it dry.
To repair, there are 2 ways:
- proper: remove the glass on the delaminated area, rebuild the foam blank with for instance a foaming resin like the sicomin, or other foam systems, shape, and re-laminate over it. Most repair guys should be able to do it.
Umberto did such a repair in http://www.gongsup.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=3925 (but the pics seem gone)
- quick & dirty (not recommended by the Gong team): drill holes in the glass just enough for a syringue nozzle to fit, fill the space with injecting resin + microspheres till it comes out in the other holes, push the glass unto the blank via weights, and let cure, wiping off the excess resin. You will get depressions in the deck this way, and care must be taken to avoid exothermia: too much resin will heat up and make the board melt or take fire.

Re: Gong Faking Bamby delamintation under the feets
Thanks a lot for the help. It’s really appreciated.
The board had taken in some water so I took off the top and have had i drying for a month.
For building up the compressed area, could i use epoxy with microballoons?
Thanks,
Knut

Re: Gong Faking Bamby delamintation under the feets
For filling the compressed area, epoxy with microballoons should work (since the depth will be small, the risk of exothermia should be minimal), or the foaming epoxy resin of Sicomin.
Try to use as much microballon as possible. The mix depends on the balloons diameters, but it is something like 1/1 in weigth or 1/7 in volume (7 times more volume of microballoons than resin)

Re: Gong Faking Bamby delamintation under the feets
Hello,
epoxy foaming is the best, because it is less hot.
But if you put more than 4cm of it, it will burn like micro ballon.
Anyway, if you repair, you board is saved. If not, your board will break.

Yup, for deep repairs, it is always a good idea to do it in many passes. Less risk, and it is much easier to control things and not leave bubbles or cavitiesOurs a écrit :But if you put more than 4cm of it, it will burn like micro ballon.

Re: Gong Faking Bamby delamintation under the feets
The board is now dryed up and i have built up the compressed area with epoxy/microballoons.
So now the next step is to laminate the deck with fiberglass and then some new questions pop up.
Do i need to use vacuum bagging?
How many layers is the minimum?
Thanks,
Knut

Hello,
no need vaccum bag for lamination.
3 layers is a mini minimum. 5 is better.

Re: Gong Faking Bamby delamintation under the feets
I only found 300 g/m² fiberglass cloth locally. Will that do or should I order some thinner fiberglass cloth online?

Hello,
it will be very strong but the problem will be the finish. You will need a huge hot coat to make it flat and nice.
