How to: repair a broken paddle (blade-shaft)
Hello guys, that's my last repair. Filippo broke his kenu some months ago, so he asked me to repair it. I'll show some pics, but I'll not describe everything about the work.... It takes too much time, so if you are interested please ask me to explain.
This is the broken paddle...
I've removed the insert from paddle and shaft with dremel. It's really difficult, you can damage the outer skin.
The cut side of the carbon surf shaft is perfect to repair the kenu. The outer diameter of the part is similar to the inner diameter of the broken shaft. It is only necessary to sand the parts to improve the resin adhesion.
Now it's time to bond the insert with the blade. I've used epoxy resin filled with fumed silica and micro balloons. It's not important the alignment of the part in this moment.
Leave the resin curing for 24 hours.
The new insert has been cut and sanded.

Re: R: How to: repair a broken paddle (blade-shaft)
To restore the angle between shaft and blade I've used my kenu to create mechanical stops.
I've tried a new material for the second bonding. It's an epoxy paste adhesive for industrial applications (3M DP490). The adhesive is very good, it's thixotropic and the mechanical properties are excellent.
Now it's time to insert the shaft and align with my home made system.
The result is very good, as you can see I've compared Filippo 's paddle with mine. You can confuse the paddle!

Re: R: How to: repair a broken paddle (blade-shaft)
The repair is not finished, the thickness of the shaft was to small, also the blade part was damaged during the crash. So it's necessary to wind carbon fiber around the bonding zone. It's time to try my new toy!!!
I've prepared the wet ply with epoxy resin. It's a very good carbon fiber, 120g/m2 8H.
Resin will be cured with vacuum, so I've applied peel ply, realise film, breather and vacuum bag.
One day later the paddle is ready for final sanding.
I hadn't the time to paint it, I was leaving for my new summer travel in tenerife.
I think the repair is successful finished. Probably Filippo will tell us his first impressions. He tried the paddle and he is not looking for me to complain!
The repair method is really long, It takes lot of time and equipment. I don't suggest to do. The right choice is to buy a new paddle, but in this case Kenu is discontinued. Filippo's kenu had more than 200 sessions!!!

Thanks a lot Umberto, it takes time to make these topics with explanations and pictures, but it helps greatly!

Re: How to: repair a broken paddle (blade-shaft)
I tested my kenu in some hardest sessions of the year (strong wind and current) and the paddle is... simply perfect... as a new one. Almost the same weight. Another great job of Umberto!!! He is a specialist! Amazing. I have broken my paddle in april and I have my Kenu after 4 months !!! , but... thanks Umberto!
